Charlotte has its nightlife scene like most cities, but one thing Charlotte has over most southeast towns is its huge family friendly environment. There’s fun to be had for all ages throughout Charlotte — enough to rival Orlando, and without the traffic! So whether you’re just visiting or looking to try something new in the area, check out these five places that offer excitement for the whole family.

1. Let Loose at Carowinds Theme Park

Known as the premier entertainment destination of the Carolinas, this 398-acre amusement park by Interstate 77 is a great way to have fun on a sunny day. There are 13 roller coasters, ranging from gentle and kid-friendly to wickedly fast and intense. See Peanuts-themed rides and shows at Planet Snoopy, splash around and cool off at Boomerang Bay, race carts at Fast Lane, and more.

2. Ride a Southern Breezes Horsedrawn Carriage

For a quiet and beautiful experience, Southern Breezes is an animal lover’s best choice. Adored by the community, Southern Breezes Carriages was founded in 1999 and features Gentle Giant Belgium and Percheron horses that love people and look beautiful. Ride in an Amish carriage as one of the friendly, knowledgeable drivers takes you around town. This small business has a flawless reputation for customer satisfaction and ethical treatment of animals, and it’s no wonder that Southern Breezes is often used for wedding services.

3. See a Live Show at Children’s Theatre of Charlotte

For those with extra-little ones, Children’s Theatre of Charlotte is a frequent field-trip spot for local schools and a great place to see a fun, colorful stage play that young kids will love. Nationally recognized for its educational and entertaining programs, the theatre lifts its curtains over 600 times a season — more than any other theatre in North Carolina.

Not only will a visit entertain kids, but it’ll support the community. The Children’s Theatre of Charlotte enrolls 2,300 young people in enrichment classes and summer camps every year, encouraging confidence, creativity, and self-esteem.

4. Pick Apples at the Orchard at Altapass

From storytelling hay rides to nature walks and apple picking, the Orchard at Altapass takes kids and families through a charming and studied experience of an honest day’s work (and play) at the farm. Kids can pick and enjoy over 15 different varieties of heirloom apples from trees planted by the original owners of the orchard. A “peck” — or eight dry quarts of picked apples — is only $10. The apple map shows where each variety can be plucked.

For a light and easy walking trail, try “A Guided Nature Walk Through History,” a network of self-guided, light paths through the woods around the orchard, with plenty of trail signs and fun activities.

5. See IMAX Shows at Discovery Place

The amazing world of science and discovery awaits at this popular educational museum and IMAX theater. Easily suited to both kids and adults, intriguing shows about everything from space to sharks await inside. Explore More Life Lab lets kids touch sea creatures and look at scientific specimens.
