2018 Ford F-150

From the Model T to the F-150, Ford has long held the crown of one of the world’s first and most trusted automobile makers. Now in an age of fast-moving technology and design changes, Ford is keeping pace with the rollout of its new engine.

More than four years ago Ford invested in the high-strength, military-grade aluminum alloy bodies and high strength steel frames that have allowed the carmaker to shed hundreds of pounds of weight off its F-150 model. Now with the introduction of a new engine in the 2018 F-150 models, Ford goes a step further in advancing quality, performance, and efficiency. The lightweight materials pair perfectly with the supercharged engines to deliver a faster and smoother ride.

More than 75 percent of the new trucks bought this year have a V6 engine, but with the introduction of the new F-150 engine, Ford delivers on promises of a heartier powertrain lineup and an increase of V6 options.

Ford’s Many Engine Choices

The 2018 F-150 engine is power packed into a more compact, yet more efficient 3.3-liter V6 which adds a dual port and direct injection technology that administers enhanced power and torque in comparison to the previous 3.5-liter V6 engine. It delivers 290 horsepower at 6,500 rpm. It’s also more efficient with better forecasted EPA-estimated gas mileage. This engine doesn’t just drive well, it can save customers money and maintenance in the long run. In line with the truck’s lighter weight, the standard 3.3-liter V6 offered in the new F-150 is designed to achieve a five percent power-to-weight ratio improvement over pre-aluminum bodied vehicles, such as the 2014 F-150 with a steel body and a 3.7-liter V6.

The new 2.7-liter EcoBoost engine available in the F-150 combines advanced dual port and direct-injection technology to provide a 25-pound jump in torque, especially at lower engine speeds when compared with a conventional V8. The engine drives home 325 horsepower at 5,000 rpm. The 2.7-liter model comes in an exclusive 10-speed automatic transmission for 2018, much like the second-generation 3.5-liter EcoBoost that was released last year.

Further standout enhancements are evident in the 5.0-liter for 2018. This engine is naturally aspirated so the significantly upgraded advanced dual port and direct injection technology result in 10 more horsepower and 13 more pounds of torque, through 395 horsepower at 5,750 rpm. As an added bonus, the engine has spray-on bore liner modification similar to that of the high-performance Mustang GT350, releasing even more weight from the aluminum block. Ford has also paired the V8 with their 10-speed automatic transmission.

A brand new 3.0-liter Power Stroke V6 diesel engine is also scheduled for a debut in the F-150. Every inch of this engine has been designed, engineered, and tested in-house at Ford to be paired with the 10-speed automatic. This will be the first diesel engine available in an F-150 model, which is due to hit the market next spring.
