Charlotte is full of memorable museums, focused on everything from sports to science and modern art. These are the four best museums covering very different categories, so there’s something here to please everyone.

1. Discovery Place

One of the best options for families is the famous Discovery Place. Kid-friendly but not too sweet for adults, the scientific exhibits cover human anatomy, space travel, the wonders of nature, and more. The museum has an aquarium, mini rainforest, planetarium, and activity rooms for kids. The adjacent IMAX theater hosts wild 3D shows.

Discovery Place is located on 301 N Tryon St. and is open every day of the week, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Adult tickets are only $15.

2. Carolinas Aviation Museum

Learn about the history of flight technology and see real aircraft up close at Carolinas Aviation Museum. One amazing, inspirational exhibit covers the Miracle on the Hudson River, where Captain Sullenberger made a safe emergency landing that saved 155 occupants.

Carolinas Aviation Museum is located on 4672 1st Flight Dr. and is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. General admission cost is $12.87 per person.

3. Levine Museum of the New South

This unique museum has all sorts of fascinating topics on southern life after the Civil War. Exhibits covering musical, urban, and social development show off the rich and recent history of this part of the United States. Learn powerful stories of kindness and family strength among Americans of African descent, and see the new exhibit that explores how the influx of Latino cultures in the south has changed the region in surprising ways.

Levine Museum of the New South is located on 200 E 7th St. and is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Individual adult tickets are only $8.

4. Bechtler Museum of Modern Art

The best art museums are those that were artistically designed themselves, and the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art was designed by the eminent architect Mario Botta to be both impressive and intimate. Hear expertly played jazz by Ziad Jazz Quartet and guest performers, learn about the devoted collection the Bechtler family maintained, or see a range of historical and intellectual art pieces. Featured artists include legends like Miró, Giacometti, Calder, Warhol, and more 20th-century greats.

Bechtler Museum of Modern Art is located on 420 S Tryon St. and is open on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. The museum is closed on Tuesdays.

History and family fun await throughout Charlotte, and its museums are one of the shining examples of this. If you have a must-visit museum you’d recommend to visitors or natives of Charlotte, feel free to leave a comment!
