The Ford Transit topped global sales for cargo vans in 2015, with 400,000 van sales registered worldwide. Ford’s executive vice president and chief technical officer, Raj Nair said: “We’re focused on building global leadership in vans and other commercial vehicles. “While others only offer vans regionally, Ford is developing a global van sales architecture to be customized to meet regional demand.”
Ford Transit European Legacy
The Ford Transit is built on a 50-year European legacy. Over the last 25 months, the company has seen its market share grow from 10.7% to 12.8% in the region. That makes Ford the No. 1-selling brand in Europe thanks to growing demand for its new, expanded Transit range – including the Transit, Transit Custom; Connect, and Courier – based on commercial vehicle registrations. Transit Custom sales grew 23% in Europe at 89,800 units during the first part of 2016, and Transit sales grew 17% in the same period.
Transit has propelled Ford to the top of the cargo van market in the U.S, as well, making up for 40% of the full-size van market through September. High demand is putting Ford on track for its greatest year in U.S. van sales since 1978. Transit outsells America’s best-selling minivan. Industry sales for vans in Mexico, China, the UK, and the U.S. are expected to continue expanding, according to the NTEA, which foresees industry sales increasing 10% in 2016. The automaker is expanding its Transit series in China, with the first Ford Transit line produced there in 1997.
“Ford sold over 247,000 commercial vehicles in the beginning of 2016- up 18.6%, and our Transit models are driving force behind that. With a new generation of powerful EcoBlue diesels, Transit and Transit Custom have even greater load-hauling capabilities and improved fuel-efficiency for reduced operating costs.””

Ford Transit New Engine & Features
Over eight million Transit and Custom vans have been built, and the line grew from a single model fifty years ago to a whole collection of cargo vehicles. 50 years of Transit vans lined up bumper to bumper would encircle the globe. And a new Transit is purchased every 180 seconds, based on sales and production data.
Earlier this year, Ford introduced a new Transit and Transit Custom, powered by the innovative EcoBlue diesel engine that generates great performance and cost of ownership improvements, with better fuel efficiency up to 13% and a low-end torque improved by 20%.
Refined new driver assist features in both models include:
- Pre-Collision Assist braking system-The first to feature Pedestrian Detection tech- reducing the severity of collisions with vehicles and pedestrians, and helps avoid some impacts entirely
- Upgraded Stability Control-Provides enhanced stability in challenging driving conditions including Side Wind Stabilization– a new feature that applies brakes only on one side of the vehicle to reduce the effects of sudden side wind gusts
- Six-Speed Automatic Transmission-A new six-speed automatic transmission is offered for the Transit and Transit Custom; as well as an enhanced AWD system, plus an advanced SYNC 3 connectivity feature.
